Don’t be fooled by the name, the Shaw Davey Slum is as beautiful as pubs can come. The name comes from a poverty report done in 1958 about Carlton by two commissioners named Shaw and Davey, who recommended to demolish the “slum” areas. Well that’s pretty funny now.
The “slum”, as the locals call it, is a great place to grab a drink and have a really well priced meal.
The atmosphere varies depending on what night you visit – from a student pub hangout to a sports pub to a nightclub to a quiet local pub. So check their website before you visit to make sure the night you’re picking suits your style.
We visited on a Sunday night so it was nice and quiet, perfect for a low key catch up with friends over a good burger.
They have a great pub menu – burgers, parmas, steaks – and heaps of gluten free options. One of the best parts about this place is the pricing – for smack bang in the middle of Carlton, the prices are very reasonable. And the food is delicious.
