Canvas: Uses symbols to identify dishes that are gluten-free.

Cecconi’s Cantina: Plans menu; stocks gluten-free bread.

David’s: Will make stir-fries without gluten.

Esposito: Modifies dishes to dietary needs.

Gingerboy: Designs menu with gluten and lactose intolerances in mind.

Grossi Florentino: Makes its own gluten-free pasta, offers gluten-free rolls.

Nice atmosphere, good service, food was ok. Yes, just ok. Not an amazingly extensive menu with pastas, pizzas, salads, risottos and meat dishes (gluten free available for all) but enough choice to suit most people. The meals sounded a lot more interesting on the menu than what they actually ended up being, for example, “Grilled Yellow Fin tuna on a salad of dried tomato, baby beans, olives, crispy potatoes and lemon dressing” sounds great, yes? What came out was okay, but it was missing a key ingredient – potatoes!

“Orecchiette Primavera – Ear shaped pasta with Spiga dried tomato, red peppers, broccolini, baby spinach and pine nuts” – yum sounds great! Result was actually penne, not “ear shaped pasta” (maybe they only had GF penne) and hardly any of the veggies mentioned. It was also a really small serve of pasta, a bit tight when you’re charging $20 for packet pasta.

It’s just a German name that means “pizza my love”, the actual pizzas are very modern Italian. Located on High St in Northcote in a converted old house, this is a casual place to have a nice dinner with friends, they also do take away. Out the back there is a beautiful courtyard garden area with a few tables, if you’re going for dinner on a nice summer’s night make sure you try and book a table outside. My favourite pizza is the “smashing pumpkin” – tomato, mozzarella, pumpkin, goats cheese and black olives, but there are much more exotic varieties to choose from. I’d suggest checking with the waiters which toppings are gluten free when you are there, and I’d steer clear of anything with salami or chorizo.

The entire menu is pretty much pizza, with some salads also available. They do gluten free pizza bases on Thursdays for a few dollars extra, if you’re going on other days make sure you call in advance to see if they can do gluten free.

This is a small cafe in a local strip of shops in Caulfield North with coffee, cakes, sandwiches and breakfast options. Unfortunately when I went they had run out of bread which was a shame as I was looking forward to a big cooked breakfast with toast. Instead I had a veggie burger wrap which was almost satisfied my craving. We went on a Sunday morning so I’m not sure if it was due to it being the end of the week but the menu and display area looked a little bare with not a huge variety to choose from.

This place would be really nice with a few couches and a bit more colour around, whilst the food was beautiful, the environment felt a little sterile – it didn’t feel like we could have sat around for ages like some other cafes around. However still recommended to try out. They also have a lot of home made pastas and meals you can take home to stock up.

I went to the Malvern shop, which is take away only, no dine in options. There is a huge menu to choose from, with a small range of traditional pizzas and a large range of gourmet pizzas. They also do kids pizzas, salads, seafood pizzas, breads like garlic bread, herb, olive, and more (for gluten free breads they do it pizza style). They do risottos and pastas but neither are gluten free.

As with most places that do gluten free pizzas, it’s a few dollars extra for gluten free and they only do one size, which is in between their regular and large size. They also do half / half pizzas for an extra $1.

Their menu states that some toppings / dressings contain gluten so keep these in mind when choosing: Teriyaki marinade, Hollandaise sauce, Caesar Salad Dressing or Croutons. I’d also probably be cautious with the salamis, pepperonis and chorizos.

The pizza we had, half Exotic Potato and half Country Pumpkin was really nice, not a lot of cheese but generous with toppings, it was filling but felt like we were still being relatively healthy compared to a big greasy pizza you get at some other places.

Gelatissimo is in Lygon St, Carlton (currently their only location in Victoria, hopefully more will be popping up soon though) near the corner of Grattan St. The best part? Half of their flavours (all the sorbets) are gluten free, including my personal favourite, Blood Orange….yummmm. Other sorbet flavours include Green Tea, Mango, Passionfruit, Guava, Lime and lots more.

I’ve only been to the William St one but every time I’ve been there has always been a massive queue, which is usually a sign that it’s pretty good! And it is pretty good food – they have a huge range of curry, noodle and rice dishes that can be made gluten free. You can select your level of chilli – if you’re a chilli coward like me make sure you ask for very mild as they are not shy with the spice! Casual setting – they mainly do take away but there are also a few tables and chairs if you want to eat in.

You can select pretty much any pizza from their standard and gourmet pizza range (minus anything with ham, salami or BBQ sauce), just ask for it to be gluten free. Gluten free pizzas can only be made in a medium size and are an additional $4.50. Staff are very knowledgable, service is fast and friendly and the pizzas taste great…what more do you need? PS: there is also a Crown Pizza in Camberwell (which I thought was affiliated with Crown Pizza in Reservoir but turns out they’re not the same company!) who are also really good – 1357 Toorak Rd, Camberwell
