Those I haven’t tried are on my list now!

Bistro Guillaume: Can modify every dish.

Botanical: Trains staff to advise patrons.

Canvas: Uses symbols to identify dishes that are gluten-free.

Cecconi’s Cantina: Plans menu; stocks gluten-free bread.

David’s: Will make stir-fries without gluten.

Esposito: Modifies dishes to dietary needs.

Gingerboy: Designs menu with gluten and lactose intolerances in mind.

Grossi Florentino: Makes its own gluten-free pasta, offers gluten-free rolls.

Jacques Reymond: Menu largely free of gluten, caters to special needs.

The Italian: Offers bought-in, gluten-free pasta dish on request.

I haven’t had the pleasure of trying any of the above restaurants except for MoVida (which was beautiful) – I think I need to celebrate more “special” occasions and try a few of these restaurants!

Very casual setting with “Mexican” decorations (hats hanging from the ceiling, pinata style animals hanging up) – this is not really a place you come to for the surroundings! The service was variable depending on who served you. One lady, who looked like she was the owner, was a bit scary when she told us very abruptly that the oven is very full and our meals are going to be a long long time. As we recovered from the shock of how she said it and not being offered a bowl of chips while we waited another waiter came over and said the same thing a little nicer and offered us some chips and dips whilst we waited.

The meals didn’t take that long to arrive in the end, we had combinations of veg and meat fajitas. Excuse the poor photos, the light was pretty bad in there and didn’t help the poor iphone with it’s photo quality.

The food was nice – huge servings, you want to be hungry when you go here! Most of the menu is gluten free, although they have a weird way of showing it – you have to ask for the gluten free list that tells you what is gluten free then compare it to the main menu. Not sure why they don’t do what most other restaurants do and just mark “GF” on the normal menu.

Overall nice food, not too expensive but not amazing value for money either, strange service that leads to not a very welcoming atmosphere – a good place to check out if you’re in the area but I don’t think I’d go out of my way to go there again.

It’s just a German name that means “pizza my love”, the actual pizzas are very modern Italian. Located on High St in Northcote in a converted old house, this is a casual place to have a nice dinner with friends, they also do take away. Out the back there is a beautiful courtyard garden area with a few tables, if you’re going for dinner on a nice summer’s night make sure you try and book a table outside. My favourite pizza is the “smashing pumpkin” – tomato, mozzarella, pumpkin, goats cheese and black olives, but there are much more exotic varieties to choose from. I’d suggest checking with the waiters which toppings are gluten free when you are there, and I’d steer clear of anything with salami or chorizo.

The entire menu is pretty much pizza, with some salads also available. They do gluten free pizza bases on Thursdays for a few dollars extra, if you’re going on other days make sure you call in advance to see if they can do gluten free.

Zingarella is one of the nicer restaurants where you won’t get accosted by someone out the front trying to convince you to eat there with a free round of drinks or convincing you the food is fantastic because they are the oldest pasta house in the street…there’s just something that makes me question the food quality if there is someone out the front proclaiming / trying to assure you how good it is! Give me a restaurant where I can make my own decision in peace any day!

I was quite impressed with this place – the service was great (there if you need it but no pressure to leave if you want to relax after your meal), there’s a really wide range of gluten free options available on the menu and the food was really tasty.

I had an eggplant parmagana with basil (all gluten free of course) – really really nice, I’m going to have to try and replicate it at home I think

My friend had sausages with potato mash (all gluten free of course).

Other gluten free options included pastas (you have to ask for gluten free pasta, and it takes an additional 20 minutes or so), salads, meat dishes, risottos and more. Unfortunately they don’t have a website so you can’t check out their menu before going, but there’s heaps to choose from.

Gurkha’s is not Indian, it’s Nepalese, but it does have a few curry options. I’d never eaten Nepalese food before coming here and was very impressed – very interesting flavours. The layout is quite casual – there’s also traditional seating area at the front.

There are several locations around Melbourne, I went to the Prahran restaurant and from their website it looks like the Brunswick restaurant also has gluten free options. I’m not sure whether the other locations cater for gluten free, it’s best to phone ahead to double check.

Does anyone know of any other places that have gluten free curry?

Very nice atmosphere, feels like you’re at someone’s house for dinner. And they have gluten free pasta! It’s a good idea to phone ahead to book and mention that you want gluten free pasta as they don’t always have it available. There’s a huge painting of Mamma herself on the main wall, so you’ll know who she is when she comes around and talks to all the diners.

You can select pretty much any pizza from their standard and gourmet pizza range (minus anything with ham, salami or BBQ sauce), just ask for it to be gluten free. Gluten free pizzas can only be made in a medium size and are an additional $4.50. Staff are very knowledgable, service is fast and friendly and the pizzas taste great…what more do you need? PS: there is also a Crown Pizza in Camberwell (which I thought was affiliated with Crown Pizza in Reservoir but turns out they’re not the same company!) who are also really good – 1357 Toorak Rd, Camberwell

I have not yet tried a huge variety of burgers, every time I seem to choose the same burger because I love it so much – the Mustard & Pickled burger! And they now have gluten free buns!

The staff are friendly and quite up to speed on what is and what is not gluten free so you can feel free to ask or double check things.

The food was good, not amazing “party in my mouth” kind of food but good nonetheless. And prices are reasonable.
