Vicolo, Moonee Ponds

Vicolo claims to be the first risotto bar in Melbourne, I don’t know if that’s true but it is certainly the first risotto bar I’ve ever been to in Melbourne, second in the world – if you’re ever in New York make sure you head to Risotteria, possibly the best gluten free restaurant I’ve ever been to. So, back to Vicolo…I was impressed with the range of ristottos on the...

Caffe Si, Caulfield North

My friends and I often joke that they way things are going with gluten free food now getting increasingly popular, maybe one day people will walk into a restaurant and have to ask “do you have any gluten?” Well Caffe Si is already one of those eateries – everything is gluten free, no gluten here. This is a small cafe in a local strip of shops in Caulfield North with coffee, cakes, sandwiches...

Zingarella, Carlton

A few years ago you’d have buckley’s chance of finding any gluten free pasta on Lygon St…today it seems like every second restaurant is offering it, which is a good thing of course. Zingarella is one of the nicer restaurants where you won’t get accosted by someone out the front trying to convince you to eat there with a free round of drinks or convincing you the food is fantastic because...

Budapest Restaurant & Palinka Bar, Elsternwick

Budapest Restaurant has been on my list to try for aaaaaages, and finally last week I did. There are not a lot of Hungarian restaurants in Melbourne but of the few that exist this one is towards the top of the list. And I have high standards – my background is Hungarian so I’m used to a lot of very nice home cooking from parents and grandparents. This meal felt like a home cooked meal and the servings...

Gurkha’s, Prahran & Brunswick

It’s always surprised me that there are not more gluten free Indian / Sri Lankan types of restaurants given a lot of this cuisine is gluten free – a curry made from scratch rarely contains gluten. Gurkha’s is not Indian, it’s Nepalese, but it does have a few curry options. I’d never eaten Nepalese food before coming here and was very impressed – very interesting flavours....

Mamma Vittoria, Fitzroy

Mamma’s is the place to go for an authentic Italian meal – she will even come over to your table and tell you herself! Very nice atmosphere, feels like you’re at someone’s house for dinner. And they have gluten free pasta! It’s a good idea to phone ahead to book and mention that you want gluten free pasta as they don’t always have it available. There’s a huge painting...

Chocolate Buddha, Melbourne

Chocolate Buddha is smack bang in the middle of Fed Square, a hard location to beat. Nice casual place to go for a hearty meal. The tables are communal so it’s not a great place to go on a first date as you may be sitting in close proximity to strangers. But for a nice meal with friends it’s a great place to go. There is a good range of gluten free options including sushi, mains and some desserts....

Olmecs, Richmond

I stumbled on this place when looking for a place to satisfy a cake craving on Friday night and discovered a really big gluten free menu! Don’t you love when that happens? I still only had a cake (they had a flourless orange cake) and hot chocolate but this is a place to put on the list for a dinner. It’s also a bakery and they apparently bake gluten free bread on the weekends. Menu includes salads,...
